An Antarctic Voyage

Part 3

21 October 2006

Dear Moin

We had really bad weather for the last few days until we crossed 60 degrees south on Friday afternoon. This morning we hit ice: it is absolutely stunning - worth getting bashed by bad weather. We are steaming through pancake like frozen ice - I can see the ice through my porthole now. Absolutely white ice and it looks spectacular. The ship is now in ice breaking mode and headed south to CASEY.

Among the expeditioners there are two from Malaysia. They are going to stay at CASEY for 3 months and do some scientific studies. I met another biologist from Hobart, who is doing some research on penguins. There are some volunteers too - their main purpose is to visit Antarctic. Many had to wait for years to get a chance. I am lucky to have this opportunity. Chief cook is an excellent person. He wants to prepare Bangladeshi dishes for me. Interestingly, before I received your e-mail, an expeditioner told me that Professor Yunus got the noble prize. People are nice on board.

I need to go now - shall  write again.
